![]() ![]() ![]() Unhappy with her home life, Wollstonecraft started life on her own in 1778 and accepted a job as a lady’s companion to Sarah Dawson, a widow living in Bath. Wollstonecraft credited Blood with opening her mind. The second and more important friendship was with Fanny (Frances) Blood, introduced to Wollstonecraft by the Clares– a couple in Hoxton who became parental figures to her. ![]() In some of Wollstonecraft’s letters to Arden, she reveals some the volatile and depressive emotions that would haunt her throughout her life. Unfortunately, the attachment became somewhat possessive. Wollstonecraft thrived in the intellectual atmosphere of the Arden household and valued her friendship with Arden greatly. The two often read books together and attended lectures presented by Arden’s father, a self-styled philosopher and scientist. Two friendships shaped Wollstonecraft’s early life, the first being Jane Arden. The costs, however, were severe– her sister suffering social condemnation and doomed to a life of poverty. Making all the arrangements for Eliza’s leave was the first sign of Wollstonecraft’s ability to challenge societal norms. In a defining moment in 1784, she persuaded her sister Eliza, suffering from postpartum depression, to leave her husband and infant. This made Wollstonecraft very protective over her mother and sisters. Her father was also quite a violent man, often beating his wife in drunken rages. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Into this breach emerged what we call nationalism, which remains the system that the overwhelming majority of human beings live under today. The sudden emergence of industrial society required a new type of person as well as a new organizing principle to support itself. ![]() This updated edition of Ernest Gellner's now-canonical work includes a new introductory essay from John Breuilly, tracing the way the field has evolved over the past two decades, and a bibliography of important work on nationalism since 1983. Students of nationalism will have to come to grips with his interpretation of the causes for the emergence of nationalism, since he has declared that most of the previous explanations are largely mythical."- American Historical Reviewįirst published in 1983, Nations and Nationalism remains one of the most influential explanations of the emergence of nationalism ever written. Ernest Gellner has written such a volume. "Periodically, an important book emerges that makes us, through the uniqueness of its theory, perceive history as we have not seen it before. the product of great intellectual energy and an impressive range of knowledge."- Times Literary Supplement "A better explanation than anyone has yet offered of why nationalism is such a prominent principle of political legitimacy today. It is a new starting line from which all subsequent discussions of nationalism will have to begin."- New Society ![]()

Kate milford books in order6/5/2023 ![]() ![]() Moreover, so many aspects of the plot made no logical sense. Here, I feel that key elements were intentionally vague, misleading or missing. ![]() The goods have to be hidden in there somewhere. With a good mystery, all the elements are there for you to solve it if you’d simply noticed them. I don’t mind some red herrings, but I like to finish a mystery and look back and feel that I *could* have solved it had I simply altered my perspective. The smoke and mirrors stuff frustrated me. The key bits could have been played out in a much shorter and tidier story. I didn't feel that what played out had a significant affect on Milo or on the community of Nagspeake. When all was said and done, I didn’t feel that anything really important had actually happened. Much of what happens actually has nothing to do with the overall plot or any meaningful character development. I would find myself enjoying most of the chapters as I read, only to feel annoyed or cheated as I pondered them after the fact. For me, it felt like style over substance. ![]() I really enjoy Milford’s writing style and her main characters are engaging and endearing. ![]() I wanted to love it and it has many likable aspects. ![]()

The giver the son6/4/2023 ![]() ![]() There's also Socratic irony, or questioning to lead another to a seemingly self-created conclusion. We can recognize irony by its three Halloween-themed disguises: Situational irony, verbal irony, and dramatic irony. Also, irony is not oxymoron: when something directly contradicts itself, such as ‘jumbo shrimp’. Yet irony is not malapropism: a situation where a word is incorrectly yet deliberately used, often for comic relief. Irony may be confused with a handful of other rhetorical devices that also contain contradictive elements. What ‘irony’ is may well be a hot topic of discussion among librarians and English majors on cold afternoons. The Giver is the groundbreaking 1994 Newbery award winner in which a young boy, Jonas, is sorted into a painfully real career receiving memories from a tired Giver in a seemingly perfect community. Lois Lowry uses irony to create complicated layers of ethics, emotion and morality in The Giver. "It’s ironic, a little too ironic don’t you think?" Aside from Alanis Morisette’s literary lyrics, irony is a common rhetorical device used to add drama and mystery. ![]() He is assured by the community that he will never be starving in his life. In The Giver, Jonas is scolded for using imprecise language of “starving”. ![]()

Race to Dakar by Charley Boorman6/4/2023 ![]() Though he's never officially announced his retirement from acting, Boorman realized he could ride bikes for a living, a very good living, and he began to consider new trips and adventures.īut something else equally important happened. The trip took them from London, through Europe, into Kazahkstan, Mongolia, Siberia, then onto Canada and the US. ![]() ![]() It didn't take much convincing for Boorman to join McGregor and the Long Way Round was born. Race to Dakar exemplifies what I love, and what ultimately attracts me, to the best travel literature - the stories of people awakening and changing from their contact with other cultures.Ĭharley Boorman - son of the famous director of Deliverance, best friend of Obi Wan Kenobi, and motorbike aficionado - was in the midst of a stuttering, mid-life acting career when Ewan McGregor talked him into taking a trip around the world on their motorbikes. ![]()

The cellar by richard laymon6/3/2023 ![]() ![]() This is about a house rumored to contain a blood-thirsty beast. I have rated this book 5 twisted □□□□□ stars!! I recommend this book only to horror lovers who are open to "anything goes" in their choice of reading material. I thought the book was well-written even though it was disturbing in many parts, but isn't horror mean't to be disturbing, shocking or downright frightening? This story is not for the faint hearted or if a reader is easily offended by graphic violence, language and sex, since it has it all. ![]() I have to laugh when I read some of the reviews because this is a true horror book and not to be taken so seriously. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. (Richard Laymon was not in my vocabulary in that lifetime). I thought this was my first Richard Laymon book but when I reached a certain part, I realized I read this book when I was still a teenager and never forgot how disturbing it was but I had no idea it was an R.L. Well! There must be something wrong with me because I really enjoyed reading this twisted story. ![]() |
